Creatuanary

I wanted to do Creatuanary for a long time and this year I finally managed. If you like creatures, you should totally check out this challenge. There are so many great works every year! Quite intimidating as well, but hey I did it! So here you go:

Nr. 1 Fishman
I did him fresh out of my mind without reference, just to get things going and commit myself to the challenge.

Nr. 2 bloodsucking dragon
I decided to go with a bat dragon hybrid. I tried to play a bit with technique and details throughout the month.

Nr. 3 Monkeywarrior
He’s an english L’ Hoest’s Monkey on a tea break during battle, because tea is important and I used to read Asterix and Obelix.

Nr. 4 Roach-Pig
I tried to make a blend of cockroach and piglet (which is also a blend of different ones, because why not)

Nr. 5 Surtur (also surt in english)
He is a jötunn (entity contrasted with gods and other figures, such as dwarfs and elves) from norse mythology. He’s mentioned in the poetic Edda. He’s baddling gods and has a bright sword. Afterwards his flames will engulf the earth.

Nr. 6 Tibicenas
They were imagined to be demons or genies who had the bodies of great wild dogs with red eyes, covered by long, black fur.I mixed black and mahned wolves together here. Bad decision on the shading there… it took for forever.

Nr. 7 Mystery creature 01: Shenron
Who doesn’t love him? Such an iconic dragon. I tried to put my own twist on him. Also tried a different way of sketching.

Nr. 8 Guyota
He is a deity from guanche mythology of Tenerife (the Canary Islands). Guayota was said to be represented as a black dog and was accompanied by demons, also in the form of black dogs, known as tibicenas. So I wanted to make him like the pack leader of the tibicenas and went for a similar style. He is much bigger and has some human DNA in him too. Because let’s be honest, humans are quite scary.

Nr. 9 Ratoncito Pérez
Literally translated into English as Perez mouse or Perezthe Mouse. It is a figure similar to the tooth fairy that exchanges teeth under the pillow for gifts. This figure is popular in Spanish and Hispanic American cultures.I mixed Jeroba with rat and octopus and applied some dumbo-logic I guess? Its 3 tails can be operated separately and have suckers. Also on its back it has bigger suckers for keeping the teeth and gifts.

Nr. 10 Chimera/ Chimäre
I tried myself with a classic chimera, I wanted to sketch one for a while. The usual description is: usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat from its back, and a tail that might end with a snake’s head.Imagine the limbs were independent like an octopus. So like the goat and lion head are having a fight with the snake tail.

Nr. 11 Butterfly Dragon
Such a cool concept and so many ways one could go.I mixed semioptila fulveolans (a super beautiful africanmoth) and some lizards and a bit of leafe tailed gecko. He’s a small sassy fellow and always hungry.

Nr. 12 Trash creature
I first wanted to make a creature out of trash, but I recently realised I suck at drawing tech stuff and I didn’t feel like drawing that…I went with trash loving animals and created an opossum and raccoon hybrid going “mission impossible” on a trash can.

Nr. 13 Desert Fairy
I got inspired from the Fairy circles in namibia for the setting. My creature is a tarantula human hybrid with insect wings. She is busy doing some magic spell in the Fairy Circle…. What do you think the spell is about? Eating all humans?

Nr. 14 Mystery Creature 02: Seasphinx
I got inspired by seahorses, coral, fish and dragons. This prompt came out quite late on the day and was therefore a bit rushed.

Nr. 15 Insectoid Gryphon
The definition of a Gryphon or Griffin is: a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and sometimes an eagle’s talons as its front feet.I threw hercules and rhinoceros beetle in the mix and this is what I came up with. Definitely a weird one, but I like weird.

Nr. 16 Giraffe Warrior
I struggled with that one at first… Then I thought if giraffes themselves would wage war, some dinosaur anatomy would be the best! So here goes my giraffe, Therizinosaurus, Stegosaurus and Pachycephalosaurus mix! Only the best for my Giraffe Warrior.

Nr. 17 Mountain Octopus
Since octopus are boneless and i tried to think of how they would survive in the mountains I thought about snails. So I came up with an octopus-snail hybrid.

Nr. 18 Odin’s Horse
His magical horse, Sleipnir, had eight legs, teeth inscribed with runes, and the ability to gallop through the air and over the sea…Like 4 legs aren’t difficult enough to draw. I wish I could have done more details and variations on this one. Maybe in the future.

Nr. 19 Lagiacrus
Lagicrus are monster from the Game Monster Hunter. They are Sea Wyverns and at the top of the aquatic Food Chain. Feared by sailors as “the Lords of the Seas”, they store enough electricity in their spinal organs to make the oceans surge. Occasionally seen resting on land.I pulled from a whole bunch of animals: Flying Draco Lizard, Salamander, Giant Horned lizard, Leucistic Flying Gecko and the size of the Lagiacrus.I wanted to make it a bit less dragon like and bring in more water animal traits.

Nr. 20 Furry Predator
My main inspiration was the honey badger aka the Chuck Norris of the animal kingdom. I also mixed in some Warthog DNA.

Nr. 21 Mystery Creature 03: Giant Spider!
This one was a difficult one for me, I can only look for a little while at photographs of spiders, after I get the creeps and have to make a break…I mixed the super scary camel spider with tarantula and some others.

Nr. 22 Ice Giant
In my research I first came across the planet explanation…But then I had to think of mammoths and had to make a creature out of it. To make it fun I threw in some snow hare DNA.

Nr. 23 The Coco (Bogeyman)
The Coco (also known as the Cucuy, Cuco, Coca, Cuca, Cucu or Cucuí) is a mythical ghost-monster, equivalent to the bogeyman. There is no general description of the cucuy, as far as facial or body descriptions, but it is stated that this shapeshifting being is extremely horrible to look at. The coco is variously described as a shapeless figure, sometimes a hairy monster, that hides in closets or under beds and eats children that misbehave when they are told to go to bed.I tried to go for a Volture Human Ghost mix.

Nr. 24 Akhlut
In Inuit folklore, the kak-whan-u-ghat kig-u-lu’-nik or akh’lut is an orca-like composite animal that takes the form of a wolf when on land, and is sometimes depicted as a wolf-orca hybrid.I went for the hybrid and Gave him some gill nostrils he can close up on land.

Nr. 25 Sandworm
Sandworms are animals similar in appearance to colossal terrestrial annelids and in other ways to the lamprey. They are cylindrical worm-like creatures with a fearsome array of crystalline teeth which are used primarily for rasping rocks and sand.My main inspiration was the lamprey in huuuge, I also thought the fins might help him navigate in sand.

Nr. 26 Streetshark
A Shark Gorilla mix, because I had to think of street fight games, so huge arms would be useful. Not sure about keeping the fur only on the arms.

Nr. 27 Therizonosaurus alien
Therizinosaurus is a genus of very large therizinosaurid that lived in Asia during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now the Nemegt Formation around 70 million years ago.His main part is Therizonosaurus with a bit of maggot and some alien influence. And a slime track, slime tracks are important.

Nr. 28 Mysterycreature 4: Aquatic scavenger
I did my reserach and went for a mix of lobster, Candy striped plecostums (peckolita Vitata) and the very creepy Osedax Worm (they are also called zombie worms and eat/ dissolve bones.)

Nr. 29 Elephant Turtle
I went for aligator snapping turtle with some elephant DNA.The page format of my sketchbook gave me a few pains in this challenge, solution this time: He’s standing up.

Nr.30 Ah Puch
Ah Puch (also called Ah ouh puc) was a Demon of the Maya, generally depicted as a Sceleton with a crocodile back.He was accompanied by a dog and the Moan-Bird, a mythic cloud demon. So of course he had to be dancing. I didn’t draw his companions, but that would be a great concept for the future!

Nr. 31 Feliciano the faun riding a mammal beetle
Feliciano is known to creatuanary people and I did my take on him. For the mammal beetle I went with a dung beetle and armadillo mix.
